SpeedArk LTD

Executive Summary: SpeedArk LTD

Project title: High Speed Analog to Digital Converter and Advanced Digital and Radio subsystems.

Overview of the Project
SpeedArk is developing a new and innovative technology for high speed Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) and Advanced Radio systems (Patent pending). The new ADC is a generic product, with wide range of applications and markets such as Communication, Instrumentation and measurements, Medical applications, Defense electronics etc. It fulfils a strong need in different markets. By this technology SpeedArk will Improve the ADC resolution (Dynamic Range/SNR) and the ADC sampling speed. The technology is shifting traditional analog processing functions, which creates technological bottlenecks into advanced digital processing methods. The architecture and implementation is mainly digital, so future improvement is faster than analog with better technology scaling. In addition this technology integrates the functions of the Data Converters and the digital processor (Such as Channelization, Filtering, Data Rate reduction) into an Advanced Radio subsystem and as well as Software Radio.

Key Advantageous:
Improved ADC resolution (Dynamic Range/SNR). Improved ADC sampling speed. The method and architecture is general/ generic: Can be used for different technologies (CMOS, BiCMOS, Bipolar, GaAs etc.) Future improvement is faster than analog with better technology scaling. Less tradeoffs in CMOS digital implementations due to reduced analog requirements. "Built in" Digital Processor useful in many applications such as Communication (Channelization, Filtering), instrumentation (spectral analysis), etc. System level/ High integration level advantages (SoC, System in Package etc): Resource re-use, overall system optimization

The Problem
Digital technologies progressing much faster than Analog/RF technologies, about 70% /year vs.10-15%/year. High speed ADC technologies and architectures are mainly analog with slow progress typical to analog circuits. ADC is becoming the bottleneck in many applications and markets. Examples of known bottlenecks:
-Communication (Software Radio, Cellular, Multi-Mode, Multi-service, ADSL)
-Measurement and instrumentation, Medical and scanner applications
-Defense electronics
Joint DARPA and IEEE view of ADC and DAC technology (May 2003, ADC Forum): "…In fact, ADCs and DACs are THE BOTTLENECKS in many Defense electronic systems"

The Market
Standalone ADC market: Total data converter semiconductor market $1.8 Billion 2002 ($2B by 2003) Estimated to grow 16% annually to $4 Billion by 2008. The High Speed ADC segment (speed over 1MSPS) $382M 2002 Estimated to grow 21% annually to over 1Billion at 2008 [Source: Databeans, Inc]. In fact, actual 2003 data showed even faster growth (31%).
